Cultural Festival

A few weeks back, one Thursday night it seemed like a good night to take a walk up-town. There happened to be a Cultural Festival going on in the plaza that had started on Wednesday and had a variety of food booths, some venders selling artesanias (mainly jewelry and other trinkets), cultural activities (dramas, presentations, art shows, cultural dances, concerts, etc.), and other things.

Raquel and I decided to walk up and see what was going on, and invited Nicole, Pau, Geo, and Michelle to join us. 

Upon arrival, we found that the Schicks and the Lobos (Wulfs) had had the same idea. We joined them watching some sort of a juggling act. (Sorry, I didn't take pictures of that.) After the juggling, the next presentation was urban dancing and while maybe cultural (and a little interesting?) their choice of music (in English) was a bit inappropriate, so we moved on.

One of the first booths we came up on was the ¡EHUI! Carnísimo booth. Duane was out walking around with his family but we got a picture of Enrique and two of their employees.

For 10 pesos you could play a game they had made and try your luck at scoring big points and winning a variety of prizes.

We made so much of a commotion uuu-ing and ahhhh-ing over their attempts at scoring, that a crowd began to gather... ;)

So..., as you do, right?, after creating a commotion..., we silently slipped away into the crowd to look for some food...but not before snapping a few pictures. :)

Now on to the food...

There were a variety of food venders which we previewed and then headed back to one that sold gorditas (a deep-fried, cornmeal type shell filled with your choice of mixture...mole, rajas de chili, carne deshebrada, etc.). We split a few of these (they were really good!) and then moved on to a stand that sold tamales. At this stand there was a woman making huge tortillas all by hand. They were probably about 1.5 ft in diameter (more or less) and super thin. I would have liked to take a picture, but I didn't want to be rude... so sorry, I don't have one to show you.

After the tamales, we headed to the churro stand. They had churros rellenos, churros covered in chocolate, cajeta, sugar, etc..., as well as fried bananas and many other things.

I got a churro relleno filled with cajeta. And honestly, it wasn't that great, but anyway...

All in all it was a fun night hanging out with the girls and since it was my first time eating gorditas, you could probably even call it a cultural experience! :)

Please pray for the businesses Productos Cárnicos (¡EHUI! Carnísimo) and Café Sed as they serve the community of Magdalena. Pray that they can be bright lights shining in the darkness around them. Pray for God's blessing on their sales and for wisdom and discernment in how they run their businesses. Pray that souls would be touched by the gospel message that they seek to share. Pray that their desire to provide opportunities for employment for those in need would be blessed.
